Farming to harbor an endangered species

Every spring millions of monarch butterflies emerge from a forest in central Mexico. Over the course of four generations, they'll migrate as far as Canada.

The first generation is born mostly in Texas. The first, second, and third generation live approximately 4 to 6 weeks. The fourth generation lives 6-8 months. In the fall, the fourth generation begins to migrate back to their overwintering site in Mexico.

During the great migration the monarch butterfly is known to fly up to 100 miles a day and will be an inch and a half larger than the previous generations. They approach south Texas converging with other monarchs forming "flyways". Eventually merging into a single flyway.

For 2 years I’ve documented a consistent flyway passing through our shared valley (bump gate and 1283). If you'd like to be notified of their arrival register on my farms website. Everyone's invited to see them, it's absolutely rad.

Imagine being surrounded by dozens of them at any given time and seeing thousands of them pass through a day. Last year it began on October 25th and ended Nov 17th. The blue arrows in the photo show their flight paths.
